Children’s counselling

If you’ve ever asked a question like, “Why can’t my child live a normal life like the other kids?” or “Will I ever be able to stop worrying?” You’re not alone.

Maybe it seems like your child is feeling lost, acting defiantly, or having a hard time adjusting to the changes they’re facing. They could be having a difficult time navigating life at home, at school, or with their peers.

As a counsellor, my role is help your child communicate their thoughts and feeling more effectively, learn new ways to solve problems, adapt to new stages of life, and build great relationships with the people they love.

Have some questions about children’s counselling?

All the talk of starting change or creating change can be overwhelming, off the mark, or not at all what you’re looking for. Caring, compassionate, and empathetic conversation is the cornerstone of counselling.

Do I need to be involved in my child’s counselling sessions?

It’s definitely best practice to be involved in the counselling process, although that can look a number of different ways depending on your child, their age, and what they’re experiencing. Often I set up an intake session with you, as a parent, prior to scheduling a session with your child so we can be on the same page with you as part of your child’s support team. It’s also important to remember that everything your child tells me is confidential unless they state otherwise, or as it relate to safety and the limits of confidentiality. It’s important for your child to have space to speak without fear that their privacy with be compromised.

Will my child be in therapy for a long time?

Ultimately, my goal is that your child can build the confidence and skills so that they don’t need therapy anymore, but at the same time I want your child to know that their counsellor will be there for them no matter what. As we make progress toward our goal, we can adjust and adapt the counselling schedule accordingly. If a future need arises, or something new comes to light, there’s always freedom to book another session.

Can you provide counselling for more than one of my children?

It is possible to offer counselling to multiply siblings or family members in some situations. Often times, when navigating family problems like communication difficulties, or challenges in relationships, it’s more effective to be able to meet with different family members. If siblings, or different family members are seeking individual counselling, I generally recommend seeing different therapists. This helps to prevent potential conflicts of interest, and usually provides the best possible support for each person. If you connect with me through a free consultation I’m happy to discuss the best route forward. I’ll help you, or members of your family who are seeking counselling, to connect with a counsellor who might be able to provide the help you’re looking for.
